Jack Anvil stared at the group in front of him. Yes, that middle one would be hard to take down but his revolvers, rifle and shotgun were within easy reach and he knew that they were loaded and ready. The sun was hot on his back, but the slight breeze was cool. He wished his buddy, Mr Nobody, was there to back him up but at least his wife, Lady Derringer, is watching his back.
“Ready, Standby, BEEP!!” He leapt into action, rifle first, then revolvers, followed by four blasts from the shotgun, the plates dancing and tumbling as the shot from the 12 gauge hit them dead centre. When the smoke cleared Jack stood for a moment, looking at the scene in front of him. The voice of Slow Wilson broke his concentration, “Muzzles up, firearms to the unloading table”.

Welcome to the world of Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS), the fastest growing shooting sport in the world. Founded in the early 1980s by a group of competitive shooters in California who were tired of the same old “walk’n – run’n – shoot” type of competition and thought it might be fun to use the guns of the Old West cowboys (and cow gals). CAS is a competitive shooting sport designed to be enjoyed by the whole family. Women and children are especially welcome.

Remember when your heroes were cowboys, walking tall and shooting straight? Come join us for some fun and try shooting real cowboy guns. Cowboys are always willing to share their guns and experience, so you don’t need your own firearms to try it out.
Shoots are held on the mornings of the first Saturdays of the month at the new On Target shooting range, George, next to the Gwaing river on the R102. Coordinates -35°59’19.5. 22°24’59.9.
In South Africa CAS is accredited as a shooting sport through Western Shooters of South Africa so you can get Dedicated Sports Shooter status.
